zzzFurther afield in Burgundy
Restaurants that we particularly like in the vicinity are:
Le Chassagne – a fabulous Michelin starred restaurant in Chassagne Montrachet. We love to walk there through the vineyards, paying our respects to the Montrachet vines as we pass and sauntering back in the moonlight. www.stephaneleger.com
L’Auberge du Vieux Vigneron – steak on the charcoal barbeque and hearty Burgundy fare, located in Corpeau about 2 minutes from the house www.aubergeduvieuxvigneron.com
Le Grenier a Sel – similar style of Burgundy meat dishes and grills, good for Sunday night when many other restaurants closewww.burgundyeye.com/../medieval-blaze-at-the-grenier-a-sel-in-chagny
Le Terroir – in Santenay on the Place du Jet d’Eau. Very good cuisine and a fine wine list. www.restaurantleterroir.com
Towns and villages
The historic town of Beaune is a real attraction with its provincial French feel and its enormous number of visitor attractions. See theBeaune website for more detail.
We particularly like the Saturday morning market with its fine display of fresh local produce. Shops worth visiting include:
- Alain Hess – the cheese shop with a stall in the market too www.fromageriehess.com/fromagerie-charcuterie-21-beaune_en.html You must try his Briallt Saverin which is excellent with the white wines of Burgundy.
- Athenaeum – a fine bookshop specialising in wine and all its attributes and accessories www.athenaeumfr.com
- A very fine nougat shop just up the Rue Monge on the right
Also worth a visit is the Caves Patriarche, the largest and oldest wine cellars in Beaune. You can visit the cellars and taste the wine.
Meursault – just 3.5km from Puligny Montrachet, Meursault is a slightly larger village with more services www.ot-meursault.fr
Chagny’s Sunday market is the one that all the local people go to. It has a fascinating array of stalls with all sorts of food etc.
Santenay is home to one of the finest wine makers at the moment is the Domaine Bachey-Legros. Christiane Bachey-Legros and her two sons Lenaic and Samuel will be happy to receive you and let you taste and buy their fabulous wines. bachey-legros.com
Chalon sur Saone has a lovely market on Sunday mornings. And Mark Wettel, the best chocolatier we have found, has his premises on the Rue aux Fevres, where the market is.
Nolay has a wondrous medieval market building which alone is well worth the short trip.
At Savigny les Beaune the winemaker Parigot cremant-parigot.com produces a very special cremant with pieces of gold floating in it. Just like a golden snow scene
